The rules Etsy actually enforces
Most shop-name lists ignore these, which is why so many people pick a favourite and then find out at signup that Etsy will not accept it. Every name this tool shows you has already been checked against all three.
- 4–20 characters. Anything shorter or longer is rejected outright, before you get to the availability check.
- Letters and numbers only. No spaces, hyphens, underscores, ampersands or punctuation of any kind. “Rustic Bloom Co.” is not a valid Etsy shop name; “RusticBloomCo” is.
- Not somebody else’s. It cannot duplicate an existing shop name or infringe a trademark — that includes brand names you admire.
How to judge the name you get
Say it out loud
Because Etsy strips out spaces, a name that reads cleanly on screen can turn into something unfortunate when the words run together. Reading it aloud catches that in two seconds.
Do not over-specify
A name welded to one product becomes a constraint the moment your range grows. “CandleCraftCo” is awkward the day you add wax melts and room sprays. Aim for a name that describes the feeling of your shop rather than its current inventory.
Keywords help shoppers, not rankings
Etsy search ranks listings, not shop names. A keyword in the name helps a browsing shopper understand what you sell at a glance, which is worth something — but it will not move you up the results page on its own. Do not trade a good name for a mediocre one to get a keyword in.

Can I change my shop name later?
Etsy allows a limited number of changes, after which you have to contact support. More to the point, every link, business card and printed insert you have already produced still carries the old name. Treat the first choice as close to permanent.
