    Etsy’s rules, in short

    What this tool checks against.

    LIMIT

    140 characters

The hard cap. Titles are not truncated on the listing page itself, but unused characters are unused search surface.

    VISIBLE

    First ~60 characters

What a shopper typically reads in search results before the title is cut. Front-load accordingly.

    STRUCTURE

    Item first, then qualifiers

Say what the thing is, then material, colour, size, occasion and recipient — in that rough order.

How to structure a 140-character title

The counter tells you whether a title fits. The order you spend those characters in decides whether it ranks and whether anyone clicks it.

    PartWhere it goesWhy
The searched phraseFirst ~60 charactersWhat shoppers see before the title is cut, and where Etsy puts the most weight
Material, colour, sizeNextThe qualifiers buyers add to narrow a search
Occasion, recipientAfter thatGift searches, which come with deadlines and less price sensitivity

Separate the phrases with commas or pipes so the title stays readable — a buyer still has to want to click it.

The first title uses a seventh of its space and names nothing a buyer types. The second opens with the searched phrase, then adds the personalisation, the recipient and the capacity — each one another search it can appear in.

    Title mistakes that cost clicks

    • Opening with the shop name. It spends the most valuable characters on a word almost nobody searches.
    • ALL CAPS. Harder to read, and easy to mistake for spam in a crowded results grid.
    • Repeating one phrase to fill space. Length helps only when every phrase is a real search.
    • Decorative symbols. They use up characters without matching anything a buyer types.
    • Leaving out the occasion or recipient. For anything giftable, that is often how buyers actually search.

    Frequently asked questions

How long can an Etsy title be?
140 characters. Most sellers stop far short of that, which leaves search phrases unused — every phrase you add is another query the listing can match.
How much of my Etsy title do shoppers actually see?
Far less than 140 characters. Listing cards and search results truncate the title, often around 50 to 60 characters on smaller screens, so the words that matter most belong at the front.
Does the order of words in an Etsy title matter?
Yes, unlike tags. The beginning of the title carries more weight both for shoppers scanning results and for matching. Lead with what the item actually is, then add qualifiers like material, colour, occasion and recipient.
Should I repeat keywords in my Etsy title?
No. Repeating the same word does not multiply your chances and makes the title harder to read. Use the space for different phrases instead — this tool flags words you have used more than twice.
Should I put my shop name in my Etsy title?
Usually not. It spends the opening characters — the ones Etsy weights most and shoppers actually see — on a word almost nobody searches for. Your shop name already appears on the listing page.
Do symbols and emoji count toward the 140 characters?
Yes. Every character counts, including spaces, punctuation and symbols. Decorative symbols use up space without matching anything a buyer types, so they are rarely worth it.
Is a longer Etsy title always better?
No. Using the available space helps when every phrase is something buyers genuinely search. Filling it with repeated or unrelated words reads as spam and lowers the click-through rate.
Should every listing have a different title?
For different products, yes. Each product answers a different search, and near-identical titles across a shop make your own listings compete with each other rather than with other sellers.
